J.Lo Targeted At
MTV Appearance |
| |
New York —
Holding giant
posters of
Jennifer Lopez
tagged as a
"Monster-in-Fur"—a
reference to the
furry diva’s
current film
Monster-in-Law,
PETA members
will gather
outside the
studios of MTV’s
hit countdown
show TRL, as
Lopez appears
inside as a
celebrity guest:
Date: Monday,
May 2
Time: 4:30-6
p.m.
Place: 44th and
Broadway,
southwest corner
The protest
comes on the
heels of the
debut of Lopez’s
fur-laden "Sweetface"
fashion
collection,
which has been
panned by
critics and
animal advocates
alike.
Protesters will
also distribute
PETA’s new
"behind the
scenes" J. Lo
DVD showing
images of the
fur-wearing
singer
interspersed
with graphic
undercover
footage of
animals skinned
alive for their
fur. Lopez
continues to
pimp for the fur
industry despite
the fact that
PETA has
contacted her no
less than a
dozen times,
pleading with
her to stop
supporting the
horrific abuse
of animals
killed for their
fur.
Three million
foxes, raccoons,
rabbits, and
other animals
are raised for
fur every year
in China, where
animals are not
protected by a
single law. The
undercover
footage shows
fur farmers
swinging raccoon
dogs and foxes
by their hind
legs and
smashing their
heads into the
ground—breaking
the animals’
necks or backs
but leaving them
fully conscious,
panting and
blinking as they
are skinned
alive. Animals
raised for fur
in other
countries, as
well as those
caught in
steel-jaw traps
in the wild,
suffer similar
agony before and
during
slaughter. And
although the
world looked on
in horror as
Canada resumed
the clubbing of
baby harp seals,
the fact is that
demand for
fur—any
fur—fuels the
killing.
"To animals
killed for their
fur, Jennifer
Lopez is the
‘monster,’" says
PETA President
Ingrid E.
Newkirk. "She
may be able to
get the images
of bloody,
skinned foxes
still alive and
breathing out of
her head, but we
doubt that her
fans who watch
this video
will."
As part of
PETA’s campaign
to encourage the
singer to stop
wearing and
promoting fur,
Lopez’s public
appearances,
including one at
Virgin Records
in New York last
month, have been
by greeted
dozens of
protesters. PETA
members will
also be
protesting Lopez
outside the
premiere of her
new movie
tonight in
Westwood, Calif.
